Today, putting your Processing sketches on your site.

1) Required - Screenshot, annotation, zip file of sketch.

2) Optional - copy code to Processing 2.X, export as Javascript, embed in page

Building a Keypress environment for playing random visuals.

Week 10 - March 16

P.S. Trying to find our way back into Javascript mode in processing. Go here, and try this. How to add modes to the contributed libraries here.

Welcome back from Spring Break. Broward Career Fair next Tuesday (Mar. 22, 3pm-7pm)

And welcome to the world of Processing. Here's what we need to do to begin:

      • Download and install Processing 3.02 , latest version, on your home computer and on your workstation in the lab.
      • Introduction to the basics of Processing: setup, filenames, folder conventions, interface.
      • Introduction to visual coding. Creating the MonkeyBear, and then creating your own version (or some other static sketch).
      • This term, I want us to be able to post our Processing sketches right away. So, we need to discuss how to convert our Processing sketches to Javascript and embed them in our website (remember that?).

Next part of the Processing process is creating interaction, with a centipede (bottom of page), and if time permits, drawing Random Primitives (we'll see how far we get).

Week 8 - March 3

Mostly Studio Time today, finishing your sound salads and ambient tracks.

Remainder of the class, working with your sample library, and working with SoundHack.

DUE NEXT TIME:

• Two sound salads and two ambient tracks. Here's the details on that.

• Your Second Post/Review

Week 6 - Feb 18

DIRT Gallery Talk, Thursday, Feb. 18 @ 6:30pm. Ritter Art Gallery, FAU Boca Campus. Also, continuing, the Jay Critchley exhibition and related events tomorrow night.

Suncoast Student TV Awards of Excellence, Call for Entries (Deadline, March 4)

BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica (Student) Short Film Festival - Call for Entries (Deadline May 31)

- - - - - -

Today, we wrap up with PureData (creating an interface with sub-patches), although we will still be using the projects we created as electronic sound sources.

So, ultimately, you need these to complete your PureData assignments:

      • 09 - AM Synth Patch
      • 12 - FM Synth Patch
      • 11b - Ring Modulator Patch
      • 14 - Sequencer Patch
      • Basic Sampler Patch (17_3-4-2-3-sampler3)
      • Sampler Patch with Sub-Patch Interface and Recording Capability (duplicate previous patch, add interface). And here's that:

You'll need to NAME all these files correctly, with your initials (09_AM_synth_JB.pde, etc.). Next, you'll need to ZIP all these files together, and UPLOAD (Put) the zip archive onto your website, and link to it on you Sound Projects page (or your PureData page, if you've broken your site down to these).

We move on to more traditional audio editing, but as always, with a twist. We'll be using Audacity and Soundhack to manipulate sound files, and we will be creating mixable media for out class project.

Here's the guidelines for building your sample library.

Week 5 - Feb. 11

We continue exploring PureData through recreating simple projects. You should have completed at least an AM synth, an FM synth, and a Ring Modulator, and we will work on the sequencer in class, if you need an assist with that.

We'll also start working on the sound file reading and writing process, and start creating the sampler. We should be able to finish one today, and also work with multiple windows to build an interface.

Week 4 - Feb. 4

This week, we start moving the course toward the exploration of sound from an acoustic point of view (here's how I organize sound-- this is created in Flash, so it won't work on tablets or mobile phones), and we begin working in procedural audio with PureData. We will build a few synthesizers and a sequencer the first day!

Floss Manual:  intro, graphical programming, digital audio

And here's a PureData sketch that illustrates changes in sound parameters (first draft)

Week 3 - Jan. 28

We'll also talk a little about your web posts/reviews (3 over the course of the semester).

Week 1

Basics of HTML Review the basics at W3Schools--a really good course, goes into a lot more detail than we got through today.

For next time, swap out the banner image on your template site, get familiar with the different sections in the HTML code of the index.html page. We will work on the Navigation next time, and also spend more time working with images and optimizing them for the web,

But, the big thing will be hosting your site remotely, so have a PayPal account with $2-$5 on it (or a credit card) so we can set up your account. Tutorial on hosting is forthcoming.

Welcome to Interactive Multimedia!

MMC 3711: INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA (4 Cr. Hrs.): An introduction to the basics of interactive multimedia production. Class projects explore the potential of interactive media to communicate, express and challenge cultural ideas. The course seeks to develop a combination of critical, technical and design skills.

In the course of this class you will:

    • expand and consolidate your visual design skills as applied to interactive multimedia,
    • become proficient in coding and programming of interactive multimedia, especially HTML5/CSS3, Processing, and PureData,
    • become proficient in sound editing and manipulation, using Audacity, SoundHack, and PureData.
    • become more familiar with new and emerging developments in areas of interest to you in multimedia and digital culture, and discuss these developments in a series of web posts/reviews
    • document your work as an online HTML5-based website that showcases all you’ve accomplished for this course.

While contemporary interactive media is made with a multiplicity of technologies, we will introduce sound software and production to help integrate all aspects of media into our work. Like any mature media production environment, the software we’ll be using (Dreamweaver, Processing, Audacity, SoundHack, and PureData) can be a bit overwhelming at times, but I plan to present the technical portion of this course in a way that is organic, thoughtful, and not too intimidating. I am most interested that you achieve a BALANCE among your visual/sonic design skills, your technical/coding abilities and your conceptual / aesthetic intentions.

What exactly do we mean when we say Digital Media, Multimedia, Interactive Media?

My little overview of interactive multimedia. If you want everything in one larger screen, check out this version.

Operating System (OS) Issues

For those of you adapting to working in a Mac lab, a couple of  short videos: PC to Mac BasicsFinder BasicsExposé Basics. Also, if you just bought a Mac and want to RUN ALL YOUR WINDOWS PROGRAMS on it, check out this tutorial (No, you can't run Mac programs on a PC, although many applications like the Adobe Suites—Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Flash—are cross-platform)

SUCCESS IN THIS CLASS. . .

. . . seems to be directly proportional to how comfortable you are with Dreamweaver, Processing, Audacity, Soundhack, and to a lesser extent, Photoshop and Illustrator. So, USE THE LABS! Work with each program we're studying EVERY DAY! PRACTICE!!
